Mahfoud: These reasons prevent Hezbollah members from joining the army
Change Movement leader Eli Mahfoud wrote on X that Hezbollah members cannot be integrated into the Lebanese Army or the country’s security institutions, citing what he described as sovereignty and legal concerns.
Mahfoud said the army is a national institution whose members must owe exclusive allegiance to the Lebanese state, while Hezbollah has its own political, military and organizational structure.
He argued that integrating Hezbollah members would create conflicting military doctrines, parallel chains of command and competing decision-making authorities, while raising concerns over military and security information.
Mahfoud also said army recruitment must be conducted individually and according to the same legal criteria applicable to all Lebanese citizens, rather than through a political settlement or collective integration.
He said the state’s authority over weapons, military decision-making, command, military doctrine and accountability must be exclusive, adding that integrating a parallel armed structure into state institutions would merely transfer the duality of power into the state.
