Aoun Marks Army Day, Reaffirms State’s Sole Authority Over Arms
President Joseph Aoun extended his congratulations to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), its leadership, officers, non-commissioned officers, and personnel, on the occasion of the 81st Army Day, emphasizing that the military remains the country’s sole guarantor of unity, sovereignty, and independence.
In a statement, Aoun said the Lebanese Army is not an institution like any other, but rather the sole guarantor of Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty, and independence. He stressed that it is time to firmly establish a constitutional and national principle that there is no legitimacy for any weapons outside the authority of the state, and no protection for the nation except through its national army.
The army alone possesses the authority, capability, and legitimacy to serve as the state’s exclusive military force, Aoun said, adding that the government is working steadily and decisively to achieve that objective in order to safeguard national stability and preserve peaceful coexistence.
Addressing developments in southern Lebanon, Aoun said the army’s responsibilities are increasing with every Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. He stressed that the next phase requires the full deployment of military units along the southern border and the exclusive extension of state authority across the area, demonstrating that Lebanon is capable of protecting its sovereignty and maintaining security through its armed forces alone.
He added that strengthening public support for the military is essential, warning that undermining the institution or distancing it from its popular backing would weaken the state and threaten what remains of the country’s stability. Aoun called on Lebanese citizens at home and abroad to regard the army as a unifying national institution that stands above political and partisan divisions.
The president also renewed his full confidence in the army’s leadership, praising its professionalism, impartiality, and responsible management of sensitive national issues under exceptionally difficult circumstances.
Acknowledging the severe economic and social hardships facing military personnel, Aoun pledged that the Lebanese state, including the presidency, parliament, and government, would continue working to improve the living and social conditions of soldiers and provide greater support for them and their families.
He added that Lebanon will continue coordinating with friendly and allied countries to secure the funding, equipment, and training needed to strengthen the armed forces.
Aoun concluded his message by saying: Long live the Army, long live Lebanon, and eternal glory to our righteous martyrs.
