MoPWT presses ahead with fisheries infrastructure upgrades
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced that, through its Directorate General of Land and Maritime Transport, it is continuing to implement a series of fisheries infrastructure rehabilitation and development projects as part of its strategy to improve fishermen’s working conditions and enhance the sustainability of fishing ports and maritime facilities along Lebanon’s coastline.
The Ministry said construction of the fishermen’s facilities at Ain El Mreisseh–Manara Fishing Port is progressing steadily. Foundation works have been completed, while structural works continue according to schedule, paving the way for the delivery of modern facilities that will provide fishermen with a safer and more efficient working environment.
At Barbara Fishing Port, reconstruction of the Fishermen’s Cooperative, which was destroyed by fire last year, has also advanced significantly. The new building has entered its final stages, with essential facilities and services being completed ahead of its reopening and return to service in the near future.
The Ministry is also continuing construction of the protective breakwater at Jal El Bahr Fishing Port, a project aimed at strengthening protection of the harbour basin against wave action, improving maritime safety, and providing safer berthing conditions for fishing vessels while safeguarding the port’s infrastructure.
The Ministry reaffirmed that these projects form part of an integrated vision to modernise Lebanon’s fishing ports and related facilities, support the livelihoods of fishermen, improve the services available to them, and reinforce the sustainability of this vital sector and its economic and social role in coastal communities.
