Rights groups urge Lebanon to raise detainees’ case
A joint delegation from the Khiam Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture and the Qana Human Rights Observatory urged Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi to pursue international action over Lebanese detainees held in Israeli prisons.
The delegation submitted a memorandum and draft resolution for consideration at the UN Human Rights Council’s March 2027 session.
According to the groups, approximately 38 Lebanese nationals have been detained by Israeli forces, while 40 remain missing. They alleged that detainees face torture and are denied visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The memorandum called for disclosure of detainees’ whereabouts, humane treatment, international monitoring and assistance for their families.
Raggi expressed concern and pledged to examine the proposal, stressing that any decision to proceed would rest with the Lebanese government.
The delegation announced plans to seek support from Lebanon’s senior political leadership.
