The General Directorate of Customs announced in a statement that the Beirut Land Anti-Smuggling Division seized more than 3,500 cartons of various types of smuggled cigarettes hidden inside a diesel tank specially manufactured to serve as a smuggling compartment and carried on a pickup truck.
The operation followed surveillance and monitoring from the Bekaa to Beirut, where division officers discovered a rear opening in the tank used to load and conceal the cigarettes. The smugglers had attempted to evade inspection procedures and disguise the actual cargo by exploiting the tank’s exterior to make it appear designed for transporting fuel.
The operation highlights how smugglers are resorting to increasingly sophisticated concealment methods, going beyond simply packaging goods to manufacturing specially designed compartments to hide them. This makes careful surveillance and field monitoring essential to detecting and foiling such attempts.
The suspect was taken to the division’s headquarters, and the seized goods were transferred there as well, pending the completion of the investigation and the necessary legal procedures under the supervision of the competent judiciary.
