President Joseph Aoun said: On the anniversary of Dany Chamoun’s assassination, we recall a painful chapter in Lebanon’s history and pay tribute to a man who left his mark on the country’s national life. The years of war have taught us that Lebanon cannot be a battleground for other people’s wars or a mailbox for their conflicts, and that it is the Lebanese who pay the price with their lives, security and the stability of their country, while Lebanon reaps nothing but division and destruction.
He stressed that the lessons we have learned from these bitter experiences compel us to uphold our national unity, safeguard Lebanon’s sovereignty and independent decision-making, and ensure that the decision on war and peace rests exclusively with the state and its legitimate institutions, in a way that protects all Lebanese and safeguards the future of coming generations.
President Aoun added: On this anniversary, it remains our duty to turn the pain of the past into a shared determination to build a strong and just state that embraces all its citizens, protects its land and people, and prevents the tragedies for which the Lebanese have paid such a heavy price from happening again.
