Information Minister Paul Morcos launched a national awareness campaign against misinformation under the slogan Be Part of the Truth, Not the Misinformation, implemented in cooperation with UNESCO and funded by UNIFIL.
The campaign features a series of awareness videos encouraging citizens to verify information before sharing it and highlighting the dangers of rumors and false news, particularly during times of crisis.
Morcos stressed that misinformation fuels social tensions, political polarization and instability, underscoring the importance of media literacy and responsible freedom of expression. He noted that the campaign forms part of broader efforts to promote ethical media practices and combat hate speech.
The minister also highlighted ongoing cooperation with UNESCO on media reform, including support for Lebanon’s new media law, which would strengthen press freedoms, abolish pretrial detention in publication-related cases and remove the jurisdiction of military courts over media offenses.
UNESCO Beirut Office Director Paolo Fontani said the initiative aims to foster critical thinking and responsible information-sharing, emphasizing that combating misinformation is a shared civic responsibility. He described the campaign as part of UNESCO’s wider commitment to media and information literacy worldwide.
