Salam says government will not backtrack on state authority, arms monopoly

  • Wed May 20 2026 11:02 am

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said his government is moving steadily and will not retreat from any decision it takes, stressing that it is following an institutional approach to rescue Lebanon from its ongoing crises.

In remarks to Kuwait’s Al-Anbaa newspaper, Salam said the government remains committed to the Taif Agreement, national constants and the pledges made in its ministerial statement.

Salam stressed that Lebanon must have one state, one law and one army, adding that limiting arms to legitimate state forces is a non-negotiable path to guaranteeing state sovereignty and preventing any unilateral decision on war or peace.

Salam added that negotiations remain the gateway to ending the war on Lebanon and restoring stability, growth and reconstruction.
