MTV's website reported that the complaint filed by lawyer Elie Mahfoud and a number of other lawyers, in connection with insults and attacks against the Maronite Patriarch, His Beatitude Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi, has officially proceeded after being approved by the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation. The case was duly registered at the registry of the Public Prosecution at the Court of Cassation under number 1068M/2026, and on 6/5 it was transferred to the IT department.
Sources indicate that the complaint has been moving forward rapidly, reaching the stage of summoning all the names mentioned in its content, in preparation to identify the rest of the defendants and anyone else the investigations may reveal as involved.
According to further information, a Maronite political figure attempted to mediate on behalf of one of the defendants so that he would go to the patriarchal seat and present an apology before the Patriarch. However, sources noted that Bkerke, which welcomed the judicial step taken by Mahfoud and his fellow lawyers, did not issue any response or comment regarding the political figure’s request.
Additional information revealed that when the matter was raised with Mahfoud during his visit to Bkerke, he said:
“I stand behind the Patriarch, and I will follow whatever Patriarch Rahi sees appropriate. However, I insist on pursuing those involved and referring them to the judiciary, and having them arrested, and later we will determine the appropriate stance. This means that the judicial investigations will continue until the appropriate decision is issued to release arrest warrants against the accused.”
