Aoun: We are facing those who do not believe in the sanctity of international law and do not respect it

  • Fri May 8 2026 1:57 pm

President of the Republic Joseph Aoun praised “the performance of the volunteers of the Lebanese Red Cross in their mission based on serving humanity with neutrality and without any bias, in order to preserve the lives and dignity of citizens,” adding that “words fall short in describing the scale of their sacrifices and their humanitarian and national commitment across all Lebanese territory.”

Addressing a delegation from the Lebanese Red Cross, he said: “You do not pay attention to risks in order to save the lives of others. This level of sacrifice represents the highest degree of selflessness, especially as you may be risking your own lives out of devotion to others, without compensation, and in the most difficult circumstances.”

He added: “It is our duty to stand by you, defend you, and protect you, as what you provide to Lebanon and its people reaches a level of sanctity. There is no sanctity higher than sacrificing oneself freely and consciously to save the lives of others, driven by your belief in the importance of the humanitarian mission you carry out, which is a source of pride for all Lebanese.”

He noted: “We have called for an end to attacks on medical institutions in all their forms, from the Red Cross to civil defense, as well as journalists, in line with applicable international laws and humanitarian norms. However, unfortunately, we are facing those who do not believe in or respect international law. We will not spare any effort and will continue to demand this and appeal to all parties to achieve this goal.”

Aoun concluded: “We hope that the aggression against Lebanon will end soon and that we will put an end to this suffering, so that the Lebanese, as a whole, can express their support for you, even if only with a widow’s mite. I salute the memory of Henry Dunant, founder of the Red Cross, whose anniversary we mark today, and I commend the humanitarian message he spread globally, which over the years and through human suffering has become a school of virtue and dedication.”
