Parliamentary committees delay amnesty law session
Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab suspended a joint parliamentary committees session on the general amnesty law minutes after it began, citing tensions that erupted during the previous session and spread beyond parliament onto social media.
Bou Saab said the sensitive law requires consensus rather than voting, warning that escalating divisions inside and outside parliament could jeopardize its passage. He stressed that the Lebanese army had never acted on a sectarian basis and remains committed to all Lebanese.
He said discussions would resume Monday after further consultations by a smaller committee tasked with resolving remaining disputed points, expressing hope the law could help preserve civil peace and ease tensions.
