Pope Leo Surprises Priests in the South

  • Wed May 6 2026 12:26 pm

The National News Agency reported that the Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon, Monsignor Paolo Borgia, created a communication group bringing together priests from the South, before surprising them with a live video appearance by Pope Leo XIV. The gesture was a notable paternal initiative carrying hope and consolation in a time of anxiety.

During the meeting, the Supreme Pontiff expressed his “spiritual closeness to the sons and daughters of the South,” affirming that he is fully aware of what is happening in this suffering region, and that he holds its people, priests, families, the wounded, and those anxious about their fate in his prayers and fatherly heart. He concluded by granting the Apostolic Blessing to all.

The Melkite Greek Catholic Archbishop of Tyre, Metropolitan Georges Iskandar, noted that the meeting was a deeply moving moment for the participating priests, as the Pope’s words and blessing came as a spiritual balm at a time when the South is living under the weight of fear, anticipation, and open wounds. He added that the appearance carried a clear message: the universal Church does not forget its suffering children, but accompanies them through prayer, closeness, and paternal care.

Participants thanked the Apostolic Nuncio for the initiative, saying it made the presence of the Holy Father tangible and present, and opened a window of light amid difficult days. They emphasized that the meeting gives priests and believers renewed spiritual strength to continue their mission, stand by the people, and carry hope where pain weighs heavily.

It is worth noting that the call was organized at the initiative of the Apostolic Nuncio, who pays close attention to the residents of the besieged southern villages.
