Berri’s meetings focus on regional developments and Israeli aggression aftermath

  • Tue May 5 2026 5:55 pm

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri received the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office and UNESCO Representative to Lebanon and Syria, Paolo Fontani, in the presence of the Communication and Information Programme Officer at the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut, George Awad.

The meeting included a review of the course of the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and its repercussions on various levels, particularly the targeting of archaeological, heritage, cultural, religious, educational, and civilian sites across various southern villages, towns, and cities, especially in Chamaa, Yaroun, Bint Jbeil, and the city of Nabatieh, whose commercial and historic market was targeted.

Speaker Berri emphasized the necessity for all international organizations, particularly UNESCO, to assume their role regarding these crimes.

For his part, Fontani confirmed that the organization is in the process of holding a conference next June, and Lebanon and these issues will be on the conference agenda, which will also address the reconstruction of those sites.

Fontani also praised the efforts of Parliament and its cooperation with UNESCO in legislative fields, particularly the modernization of the media law.

This afternoon, Speaker Berri received the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa, with whom he discussed developments in Lebanon and the region, as well as the latest political and field updates due to Israel’s continued aggression and violation of the ceasefire resolution, in addition to the bilateral ties between the two countries.
