Aoun Marks Greater Lebanon Anniversary, Calls for Peace and State-Building

  • Tue September 1 2026 4:58 pm

President Joseph Aoun marked the anniversary of the proclamation of Greater Lebanon on September 1, 1920, saying the milestone crystallized the Lebanese idea through a political entity bringing together the country’s diverse communities and constitutionally enshrining Lebanon as a state with a mission.

Aoun said the process was further consolidated with the proclamation of the Lebanese Constitution and Republic in 1926, whose centenary Lebanon is marking throughout this year, and later through independence and the establishment of state institutions.

Despite challenges and conflicts, Lebanon endured and is returning to play its role among nations, Aoun said. He stressed that the priority today was to end wars, safeguard sovereignty, build the state and its institutions, and revitalize the economy and business activity.

This can only be achieved through everyone’s return to the state, which alone is the reference for all Lebanese, he added, underscoring the National Pact as a common foundation that preserves diversity within unity.

Separately, Aoun discussed judicial affairs and the work of the Mount Lebanon Public Prosecution Office with Mount Lebanon Public Prosecutor Judge Sami Sader.

The president also received Union of Arab Chambers Secretary General Dr. Khaled Hanafy, reaffirming Lebanon’s commitment to keeping the union’s headquarters in Beirut and calling for stronger public-private partnerships to support growth and bolster confidence in the Lebanese economy.
