Aoun urges NSSF to safeguard social security funds

  • Tue September 1 2026 11:36 am

President Joseph Aoun stressed that the National Social Security Fund belongs to all Lebanese and must not be treated as a sectarian or partisan institution, urging its board to ensure social security and provide services in a modern and transparent manner.

Aoun made the remarks during a meeting with NSSF Board Chairman Bechara Asmar, who headed a delegation from the fund’s board of directors.

Your responsibility is to work to ensure social security for the Lebanese and provide services in a modern and transparent manner, Aoun said.

He also emphasized the need to safeguard public funds, particularly end-of-service indemnities owed to insured workers, and to ensure adequate health coverage for beneficiaries after retirement.

Aoun said corruption remained Lebanon’s fundamental problem, stressing that combating it required a strong and impartial judiciary as well as greater reliance on digital transformation.

Following the meeting, Asmar said the delegation briefed the president on the board’s new start and its efforts to increase benefits and move from the current end-of-service indemnity system toward a pension scheme.

He added that the fund was working to restore compensation for workers who left employment between 2019 and 2024, expand NSSF coverage to include new categories and further develop automation and digital systems.
