US Vice President JD Vance said that “what you have witnessed is significant progress in Lebanon: less gunfire, fewer attacks, but from time to time you will still see some tensions or limited incidents. This is something that will have to be addressed through diplomatic channels.”
He added: “Regarding the Lebanese aspect, this is about regional peace, right? This is about regional peace. What that means is that we expect Hezbollah to stop launching rockets and carrying out attacks against Israelis. We also expect Israelis not to escalate excessively in Lebanon. Both sides must adhere to their part of the agreement.”
He continued that ceasefire agreements are sometimes complex, noting that the President of the United States had previously described a ceasefire in the region as sometimes meaning “they are shooting at each other a little less than before.”
He said Secretary Rubio has been handling the file and that progress has been good, with a noticeable reduction in fire, but that the situation still requires monitoring and management.
He concluded that the ultimate goal is for the Lebanese government and its elected representatives to be able to enforce security and control in southern Lebanon so that Hezbollah does not take over the country, ensuring Israel does not feel threatened and therefore does not strike southern Lebanon or Beirut.
