Salam: Iran’s Rejection of Ceasefire Shows It Still Holds the Final Say in Lebanon

  • Fri June 12 2026 3:52 pm

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Iran’s rejection of a proposed ceasefire agreement with Israel demonstrated that the ultimate decision-making authority in Lebanon remains in Tehran.

In an interview, Salam argued that Iran’s position, announced before Hezbollah had publicly stated its stance, highlighted the extent of Tehran’s influence over the group and the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in shaping its decisions.

He contrasted the current situation with the era of the late Hassan Nasrallah, saying the former Hezbollah leader had enjoyed a greater degree of influence within the decision-making process.

Salam stressed that only the Lebanese state can secure the resources needed for reconstruction and negotiate Israel’s withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory. Despite the ongoing conflict and challenges, he expressed cautious optimism about Lebanon’s future, saying the country possesses significant potential and that comprehensive reforms remain the only path toward restoring a functioning state and sustainable recovery.
