Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Rahi has received a delegation from the Hay’at Faaliyet Beirut at the patriarchal seat in Bkerke, where discussions focused on the deteriorating developmental, social and environmental conditions in the capital.
The delegation warned of growing disorder, displacement, corruption and the transformation of some areas into informal hotspots threatening Beirut’s identity and historic role. Members described Beirut as a humanitarian and social disaster city, citing problems linked to waste management, drugs, urban chaos and population pressure caused by displacement.
Rahi expressed sorrow over the state of the capital, describing Beirut as the mother’s home and the mirror of the nation, and called for unified efforts to preserve the city’s identity and address its crises.
Separately, Rahi met Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Joseph III Younan to discuss church affairs and current local and regional developments.
