President Joseph Aoun has received Minister of Information Paul Morcos at Baabda palace.
Following the meeting, Minister Morcos said: We discussed the legislative track related to draft laws and proposals concerning the media sector, in light of the recent meeting with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, as well as the ongoing efforts to modernize the laws regulating the sector in line with digital and professional developments.
The meeting also addressed grants and assistance provided to media outlets, and ways to support media institutions and enable them to continue fulfilling their national and professional role despite the difficult circumstances.
Minister Morcos added: We reviewed the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Information in the field of digital awareness and the rational use of social media, particularly in confronting misinformation and hate speech during crises and wars.
Morcos added that he briefed the President on the awareness, educational, and training campaigns carried out by the Ministry in cooperation with UNESCO, UNICEF, UNIFIL, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, aimed at promoting awareness of the responsible use of digital media.
He added: We also reviewed the ongoing cooperation between the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of National Education and Higher Education, particularly with regard to broadcasting awareness videos as part of training programs dedicated to school pupils and university students on the safe and responsible use of social media.
The meeting also addressed the standards and regulations being developed to govern the use of online platforms by children and adolescents, in a way that protects them from digital risks and harmful content. ‘We stressed the importance of promoting responsible media, strengthening a culture of digital awareness, and fostering national dialogue to protect society in the face of current challenges.
