President Joseph Aoun said that mayors play an essential role in citizens’ lives, as they serve as a link between the people and the state and represent the public administration and its presence within their local communities.
During a meeting with the president and members of the board of directors and the director general of the Cooperative Fund for the Mayors, Aoun stressed that their responsibilities go beyond processing transactions and preparing official documents, as they are directly linked to citizens’ rights and interests. This, he said, requires the highest standards of accuracy, trustworthiness and integrity.
He emphasized that integrity is not optional when exercising public responsibility, and transparency is not a mere formality; both are the foundation of trust between citizens and the state. He added that respect for the law and equal treatment of all citizens, free from favoritism and arbitrary decisions, are essential to establishing a fair and effective administration.
President Aoun noted that serving citizens lies at the heart of public responsibility and that any position held by a public official, regardless of rank, is a trust that must be safeguarded and whose duties must be carried out impartially and faithfully, with the public interest placed above all else.
He concluded: The state we seek to build is a state governed by the rule of law and institutions, one that protects its citizens’ rights and preserves their dignity. Every official, from the highest positions to the smallest local administrations, must contribute to building it through integrity, competence and a sense of responsibility.
