Derian calls for Greater State support for Tripoli

  • Mon October 5 2026 1:37 pm

Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian visited the Tripoli Dar al-Fatwa, where he was received by Tripoli and North Lebanon Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Tarek Imam, religious officials, judges and members of the Higher Islamic Council and Tripoli Awqaf.

Derian later chaired a meeting attended by Abdul Razzaq Qarhani, representing former Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and MPs Ashraf Rifi, Faisal Karami, Taha Naji, Ihab Matar and Abdel Aziz Al-Samad.

Imam welcomed Derian, praising his national and religious role and stressing the importance of unity around Dar al-Fatwa.

Derian described Tripoli as Lebanon’s second capital and a model of coexistence, moderation and national unity. He praised the resilience of its residents amid mounting economic and social difficulties and called for stronger efforts by the state, municipality and municipal unions to address the city’s problems.

It is completely unacceptable for the second capital to become a dumping ground for waste, Derian said, urging authorities to act more effectively to alleviate residents’ hardship.

He also called on Tripoli’s political and social leaders to unite in vision and action for the city, stressing that the state has a duty to support Tripoli in view of the role it has historically played in embracing state institutions.

Derian reaffirmed his confidence in Mufti Imam and said Dar al-Fatwa institutions across Lebanon share a unified mission aimed at safeguarding the dignity and interests of Muslims and all Lebanese.
