Yazbeck: Army should deploy all or most of its forces to the south
MP Ghayath Yazbeck wrote on his X account:It is saddening that the Lebanese state is willingly taking part in the international effort to find someone to fill the void that will result from the end of UNIFIL’s mission in the south. It is indeed saddening because, by doing so, the state is effectively acknowledging or surrendering to the notion that it is unwilling or unable to exercise control through its legitimate military forces over a part of its territory that is either occupied or left without proper control, and to bring it back under its authority and protection, whatever the cost.
Israeli occupation is oppressive, Iranian occupation is shameful, but Lebanese hesitation is an unprecedented disaster in modern history. This is not mere rhetoric; the solution exists. The army should deploy all its forces and brigades, or most of them, to the south. We are talking here about 40,000 soldiers, while the gaps left inside the country by their deployment could be filled by other security forces another 90,000 personnel.
This must be done with the support of Lebanese who understand the gravity of this moment and take pride in what their state is doing and in the role played by their army. It would be a shame to waste a historic, decisive moment that may not come again for another hundred years. Exceptional circumstances require exceptional solutions and exceptional people.
