Salam’s New York meetings: Two key objectives
Lebanon, which is working to lay the groundwork for recovery and explore future opportunities to rebuild from the impact of the latest Israeli war, continues its diplomatic efforts to prevent the fate of the south from being separated from any UN framework. The Lebanese delegation, headed by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and participating in the regular session of the UN General Assembly, is working on several fronts to give diplomacy precedence over any other option. However, it faces the challenge of Israeli interests, particularly at this stage ahead of the parliamentary elections.
A source familiar with the matter told Al-Anbaa Online that international diplomatic engagement, backed by Arab and regional support, is crucial for Lebanon to regain its strength and succeed on the diplomatic front. The source said the meetings held by the prime minister and the accompanying delegation in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly carry two main objectives.
The first is to build Arab and international diplomatic support, leveraging the momentum of the summit and the international positions backing the Lebanese state to help it pursue diplomatic negotiations with Israel from the perspective of the Lebanese government.
The second is for the Lebanese delegation, together with the diplomatic teams in Washington and at the United Nations, to work toward securing a position in support of maintaining the presence of UNIFIL forces.
