National commission for Lebanese women advances women, peace and security action plan
The National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) convened two coordination committee meetings to advance implementation of Lebanon’s second National Action Plan on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
The meetings focused on the plan’s third priority, promoting a culture of peace and conflict prevention, and its fourth, ensuring a comprehensive gender-responsive approach to relief and reconstruction.
NCLW Secretary-General Natalie Zaarour said the meetings aimed to strengthen coordination among ministries, public institutions, civil society, UN agencies and international partners as implementation moves forward. She stressed the importance of women’s participation in national dialogue, negotiations, reconciliation, mediation and conflict prevention.
UN Women Representative in Lebanon Gielan El Messiri said adoption of the second action plan marked an important milestone and that the priority now was to translate national commitments into sustainable institutional action and tangible results.
The meetings, held in partnership with UN Women and with support from Finland’s Foreign Ministry, reviewed progress, implementation challenges and future steps under the two priorities. Lawyer Lara Saadeh presented the planned interventions, which participants discussed with a view to strengthening coordination and monitoring implementation.
