Italian Diplomacy on Lebanon Intensifies… Vatican Steps Up
Political sources told Al Markazia that President Joseph Aoun’s visits to the Vatican and Italy have distinct objectives and significance.
Although his visit to Italy comes in connection with an international event, it carries particular importance, notably because Rome is hosting the Lebanese-Israeli negotiations and is closely following the post-UNIFIL phase. Italy is also conducting quiet diplomatic contacts at several levels concerning Lebanon.
Aoun’s Vatican visit, meanwhile, has several dimensions, most notably following up on contacts by the Holy See with key international players, from the United States and Europe to countries in the region, in an effort to support Lebanon and help it navigate the current phase.
