Trump and Netanyahu Hold Positive, Productive Meeting
This was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s eighth visit to the United States since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, which is a record no other leader has matched over the same period.
But this was also Netanyahu’s most complicated visit yet. It took weeks of efforts to secure a meeting with Trump, amid clear signs of coolness from the U.S. president, who initially declined to set a date.
The two leaders eventually met shortly before the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham. Netanyahu entered the White House through a back entrance, and this was not the first time he has done so.
Protocol-wise and politically, such an entrance may reflect a desire to avoid media coverage, prevent the public display of strained relations, or contain growing disagreements between the two leaders over a number of strategic issues.
