Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Youssef Raggi departed Beirut for Rome and the Vatican on an official visit focused on diplomatic discussions surrounding the situation in southern Lebanon.
During his trip, Raggi is scheduled to meet with Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, as well as his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani.
The visit carries particular significance in light of repeated calls by Pope Leo XIV for peace in Lebanon. The Vatican is also known for its quiet but active diplomatic role in supporting Lebanon’s state institutions and promoting the country as a model of human dignity, freedom, and interreligious coexistence.
On the Italian front, talks will focus on Rome’s interest in strengthening stability in Lebanon and its role within the European Union on this issue. Discussions are also expected to cover Italy’s ongoing military support for the Lebanese Army, as well as its significant contribution to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where it remains one of the largest troop contributors.
Additionally, both sides may explore Italy’s readiness to support any Lebanese proposals aimed at complementing or potentially replacing UNIFIL’s role in maintaining stability south of the Litani River.
