On the 50th anniversary of the civil war, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam took a moment of silence in Martyrs' Square in Beirut, following a ceremony honoring the Lebanese flag and playing the national anthem.
Salam also laid a wreath of flowers at the Martyrs' Monument, after which he delivered a speech highlighting that we are gathered here today in the square that once divided our people during the civil war, and it is important for us to regain the trust of the citizens and for them to come together, with each other and with their state.
He added, Martyrs' Square represents the martyrs of all of Lebanon; we must learn from the tragedies of the war, and now is the time to rebuild our state—one that can protect us through its army.
Regarding the war, he said, We remember it so that it never happens again... We remember it to learn from its experiences.
Salam also affirmed that the government is working diplomatically to liberate the points in the south from Israeli occupation.
