Prime Minister Nawaf Salam held a series of meetings at the Grand Serail, addressing a wide range of issues from labor and education to environmental concerns and post-conflict reconstruction.
In his meeting with Dr. Ruba Jaradat, Regional Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), discussions focused on the ILO’s activities in Lebanon and the Arab region.
Jaradat highlighted the organization’s response to the recent conflict in Lebanon, particularly its support for recovery and reconstruction efforts. She emphasized the ILO’s focus on social protection, private sector pension reform, and regional support for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria. She also underscored the importance of job creation in Lebanon.
Prime Minister Salam also met with MP Hassan Mrad, Chair of the Parliamentary Education Committee, and MP Ashraf Beidoun to discuss education-related matters.
Later, MP Haidar Nasser raised the need for equitable treatment of municipalities, calling on the Prime Minister to ensure that any future law benefiting Beirut’s municipal council also includes the city of Tripoli. He also presented a collection of books authored by residents of Jabal Mohsen.
In his final meeting, Prime Minister Salam welcomed a delegation from the Council for the South, headed by Hashem Haidar, who reported on ongoing reconstruction efforts following the recent ceasefire. Haidar said the Council had reopened roads to facilitate residents’ return, cleared rubble, and completed 80% of damage assessments for homes and public institutions. The Council has so far restored 125 public schools, with another 45 pending completion, and is currently rehabilitating 80 public facilities including hospitals, government buildings, dispensaries, and civil defense centers. All efforts, Haidar confirmed, are being coordinated with the relevant ministries and agencies.
