Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Abdul Latif Daryan received former Prime Minister Hassan Diab at Dar Al-Fatwa, where they discussed developments in Lebanon and the region, particularly the worsening economic and social conditions facing Lebanese citizens.
Speaking after the meeting, Diab said discussions reflected shared views on the urgent need to address the country’s mounting challenges.
He emphasized Dar Al-Fatwa’s role as a national institution promoting dialogue, tolerance and moderation, warning that undermining national institutions and religious authorities could fuel extremism.
Diab called for unified national efforts to confront Israeli occupation in South Lebanon and the economic and social crises threatening the country’s stability.
He regretted that Lebanon had failed to implement an economic recovery plan presented by his government six years ago, accusing financial and personal interests of obstructing the process.
Diab stressed that Lebanon had yet to agree on a comprehensive, balanced and equitable recovery plan in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He expressed hope that negotiations with the IMF would accelerate despite the Constitutional Council’s decision to annul an amendment to Article 3 of the bank restructuring law adopted by Parliament.
Separately, Grand Mufti Daryan received Swedish Ambassador to Lebanon Thomas Brøndén and Danish Ambassador Mette Thygesen, with whom he discussed developments in Lebanon and the region.
