Environment Minister Dr. Tamara El Zein launched preparations for Lebanon’s national carbon market roadmap, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and its Climate Promise initiative, under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
El Zein said the initiative aims to transform emissions reductions into financing and investment opportunities, particularly through internationally recognized carbon credits.
Chairing a technical meeting with international expert Dr. Axel Michaelowa and officials concerned with solid waste management, she outlined opportunities for developing eligible projects in the waste sector.
She stressed that carbon financing could improve project viability, attract investment and support sustainable environmental solutions.
El Zein announced plans to expand consultations to other sectors, particularly energy, in coordination with relevant ministries.
She emphasized that carbon credits require rigorous measurement, verification and compliance with international standards, reaffirming that climate financing must deliver tangible environmental and economic benefits.
