PM Nawaf Salam meets Arab League chief

  • Mon October 19 2026 6:22 pm

Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam, on Monday received Arab League Secretary General, Nabil Fahmy, and his accompanying delegation at the Grand Serail, in the presence of Lebanon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Youssef Raggi, Lebanon’s Ambassador to Cairo Ali Al-Halabi, and the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Judge Mahmoud Makkieh.

The meeting addressed the latest developments in Lebanon and the region. Premier Salam stressed the importance of continued Arab support for Lebanon, particularly for the Lebanese state’s efforts to secure Israel's full withdrawal from Lebanese territory and extend its authority across the entire territory through its own forces alone.

Premier Salam also emphasized the importance of Arab countries supporting Lebanon in its return, recovery, and reconstruction process, in a way that helps residents remain on their land and strengthens the presence of state institutions.

Salam further stressed the importance of encouraging Arab investment in Lebanon, particularly in infrastructure and regional connectivity projects, in a way that supports economic recovery and strengthens Lebanon’s integration into its Arab surroundings.

Following the meeting, Fahmy said: Today, I met with the Prime Minister, following meetings with the President of the Republic and the Speaker of Parliament. These were high-level meetings that gave me the opportunity to listen to Lebanese leaders and hear their assessment of the difficult political situation in the region in general, as well as the circumstances facing Lebanon in particular.

For my part, I conveyed to them the Arab League's support, as well as my personal support, for Lebanon, and emphasized the priority Lebanon holds on the League’s agenda. This was reflected in a strong resolution adopted at the League’s most recent Ministerial Council meeting, which included support for Lebanon, its state, institutions and positions, as well as support for Lebanese-Lebanese consensus, and for the Lebanese nation-state. The resolution also affirmed the commitment to supporting Lebanese efforts to resolve outstanding issues and meet the needs of Lebanese citizens.

This resolution formed the basis for my current visit. I wanted Lebanon to be among my first visits outside the region following the adoption of the resolution, in order to build on its impact and capitalize on its outcomes.

Fahmy added,  I also held a number of meetings with members of the Lebanese Parliament. I will continue these meetings today before making a visit outside Beirut. I will then return to Cairo, to the League’s General Secretariat, with a comprehensive assessment and a clear understanding of Lebanon’s priorities.

God willing, I will seek to achieve the desired objectives and ensure the proper implementation of the Arab League Council’s resolution in a manner that responds to the needs of the Lebanese state, which holds particular importance for us.
