Aoun leads a series of meetings

  • Mon October 19 2026 2:57 pm

President of the Republic Joseph Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to a diplomatic solution despite mounting challenges, stressing that negotiations remain far less costly than a devastating war whose consequences continue to burden the Lebanese people, particularly residents of South Lebanon.

Speaking during a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at Baabda Palace, Aoun said Israel had failed to respect the agreed framework and continued its daily violations in the South, undermining Lebanon’s efforts to restore stability and strengthen state authority.

He welcomed Arab League initiatives aimed at helping Lebanon overcome its current challenges.

Fahmy reaffirmed the League’s full commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, state institutions and territorial integrity, announcing plans to visit South Lebanon on Tuesday to assess conditions firsthand.

He pledged to intensify diplomatic contacts with Arab and Western countries and mobilize political, economic and social support for Lebanon.

Fahmy also emphasized unanimous Arab backing for Lebanon’s sovereignty and negotiations with Israel, while acknowledging the dangers posed by escalating regional tensions.

Separately, Aoun discussed domestic and regional developments with former Deputy Parliament Speaker Elie Ferzli.

The president also met Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmad Hajjar to review security conditions and measures aimed at strengthening stability nationwide.

Discussions focused on enhanced security deployments and patrols by the Internal Security Forces in coordination with the Lebanese Army, particularly in Beirut, alongside preventive measures to address potential threats.

The meeting also emphasized strengthening the presence of state institutions in South Lebanon and supporting municipalities in improving public services, meeting residents’ needs and reinforcing their ability to remain in their communities.
