Lebanon’s electricity sector is showing signs of progress following Energy Minister Joe Saddi’s decision to suspend his duties.
Saddi met with the newly appointed board of directors of Électricité du Liban (EDL) as its chairman, Nassib Nasr, took office. The meeting was followed by the start of practical efforts to restart the Zouk and Jiyyeh power plants, which had remained shut down, with no solution reached under the previous administration.
During a Cabinet session, Lebanese Forces ministers called for the removal of any legal obstacles preventing the plants from resuming operations. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam responded positively to the request.
Salam also agreed to work with Saddi to secure payment of part of the outstanding bills and arrears owed to EDL by public administrations.
