MP Georges Adwan, a member of the Strong Republic bloc, wrote on X:
Amid the severe cost-of-living crisis, the Lebanese Forces will not stand by and watch while the government can immediately ease the burden on people.
Why not collect the electricity arrears owed by state institutions, amounting to around $280 million, instead of passing them on to citizens?
Why not adopt a flexible tariff structure and increase electricity supply hours, when adding two or three hours of supply a day would reduce generator bills and save millions of dollars? Each additional hour saves Lebanese households $250 million annually.
Why insist on the 300,000-lira fee after fuel prices have doubled?
And why should the state not bear the cost of the exemptions it granted to the South, worth $70 million, instead of passing them on to citizens?
Electricity is a service, not a tax, and the state’s deficit must not be covered from the pockets of citizens and depositors.
The Energy Minister’s outcry is justified, and the government, particularly the finance minister, must respond quickly and assume its responsibilities.
The priority should be to ease people’s suffering, not add to their burdens.
