Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Syria has no intention of engaging with Hezbollah or interfering in Lebanon's internal affairs, stressing that all issues were discussed with complete clarity during his meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani last week.
Sources close to Berri, speaking from Ain el-Tineh, said relations with the presidency at Baabda remain highly strained. They added that mediation efforts led by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan have so far resulted only in limited communication between President Joseph Aoun's adviser, André Rahal, and MP Ali Hassan Khalil, with no progress achieved on the outstanding points of contention.
Berri also said that, ultimately, Lebanon will have to return to what was outlined regarding the country in the Iranian-U.S. memorandum of understanding, negotiations on which began in Islamabad.
