Italy to support any new UNIFIL formula in Lebanon
Italy’s Joint Operations Commander, General Giovanni Maria Iannucci, said Italy’s 2026 international missions plan includes continued attention to Lebanon, where UNIFIL may change its current format by the end of the year.
He noted that UN Secretary-General António Guterres has proposed three models for developing the UN presence in Lebanon, adding that the Lebanese government views continued UN engagement, even in a different form, as important for supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and preserving stability.
Iannucci stressed that Italy will continue to support any new formula adopted for Lebanon.
