Chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee, MP Ibrahim Kanaan, said after meeting President of the Republic Joseph Aoun, that the President briefed him on the course of the negotiations in Washington, as well as their objectives and underlying context.
MP Kanaan added: Following the meeting, I am even more convinced of and committed to the goals of the President of the Republic, foremost among them the full liberation of Lebanese territory in accordance with the internationally recognized borders, the return of the displaced, and then reconstruction.
Kanaan continued: We must be alert to the dangers of the language of treason and incitement, because national unity is the cornerstone, and undermining it today will only entrench division, the occupation, and the erosion of the nation.
He also stressed that the issue of restricting the possession of arms to the state is a Lebanese matter and a necessity for protecting Lebanon, particularly in the aftermath of the war. It has been a longstanding demand since the Taif Agreement and is not a new issue.
Separately, President Aoun received at Baabda Palace MP Edgar Traboulsi, with discussions touching on current issues.
On emerging, MP Traboulsi said, I was briefed by President Aoun on the atmosphere and course of the Washington negotiations, and I shared my observations and vision regarding them.
