UNIFIL: Ongoing Operations in the South Despite Intense Escalation
The UNIFIL issued the following statement:
The violent escalation witnessed last night represents a further worrying deterioration in the situation between Lebanon and Israel.
The statement added: The heavy exchange of fire, increased aerial and ground activity, and the heightened presence of Israeli forces inside Lebanese territory are all developments of serious concern. Equally worrying is the renewed issuance of so-called 'evacuation orders' by the parties to the conflict, which affect civilians on both sides of the Blue Line.
UNIFIL reiterated its call for all parties to fully comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and to implement a complete cessation of hostilities, as the only path toward lasting stability.
The statement concluded: UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to deploy at their positions across the area of operations in southern Lebanon and along the Blue Line, reporting violations, liaising with the parties, and, where possible, facilitating humanitarian access and protecting civilians.
