After the Session Was Adjourned… MPs Approve Adwan’s Request!
After lawmakers failed to restore a quorum, MP Georges Adwan said it appeared there was “for some reason” an intention to postpone the session until tomorrow.
Before leaving the chamber, Adwan called for the agreed amendments to the general amnesty law to be formally upheld, particularly a provision allowing the release of detainees who have served more than 12 years and enabling them to complete their trials outside prison. He also called for the issue of civil claims to be addressed.
MP Ali Hassan Khalil said lawmakers remained committed to the understandings reached with fellow MPs, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
“We stand by what we agreed on, and we will move forward with it,” Khalil said.
MP Sajih Attieh joked: “And whatever Speaker Berri goes along with, we go along with too.”
Adwan called on MPs to attend tomorrow’s session and ensure a quorum, stressing that the general amnesty law should not be tied to any condition or other legislation and should be passed regardless of the fate of other bills.
MPs reaffirmed their commitment to the understandings reached on the law.
