Kataeb Party leader and MP Samy Gemayel met United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jean Arnault at the party’s headquarters in Beirut, where they discussed developments on the domestic and regional fronts amid the current situation.
According to a party statement, the talks focused on key issues facing Lebanon, including the ongoing Lebanese-Israeli negotiations under US mediation and the national principles that should guide Lebanon’s approach in a way that safeguards its sovereignty and rights. The two sides also discussed President Joseph Aoun’s recent visit to Washington and its initial outcomes in strengthening international support for Lebanon and reinforcing the state’s priorities.
The meeting also addressed possible scenarios following the end of the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the challenges that could arise, with both sides stressing the importance of preserving stability in southern Lebanon, maintaining international support and ensuring the continued deployment of the Lebanese army.
Gemayel reaffirmed his support for Lebanon’s constitutional authorities, represented by the president and the prime minister, stressing the need to implement government decisions, strengthen state institutions and ensure that decisions on war and peace remain exclusively in the hands of the Lebanese state.
