Deal Reached on General Amnesty Law
The general amnesty law remains a subject of contention among the parliamentary blocs as they seek to reach a formula acceptable to all parties.
According to MTV sources, an agreement was reached between the blocs to reduce life imprisonment from 20 years to 17 years. In cases of merged sentences, the harshest sentence would be counted along with a quarter of the remaining sentences. The agreement also includes moving forward with the deportees’ file and reducing penalties for drug traffickers.
Under the agreement, detainees held without trial for 14 years, rather than only 12 years, would also be released from prison.
For his part, MP Pierre Bou Assi said in an interview with MTV that “we must be cautious and strict regarding drug traffickers because it is a sensitive issue that could derail society’s moral compass, but we will discuss it calmly.”
