Prime Minister Nawaf Salam held a series of meetings at the Grand Serail, focusing on local development, justice reform, and reconstruction.
MP Jihad Al-Samad discussed the upcoming municipal elections in North Lebanon and the security situation amid ongoing Israeli aggression.
MP Ashraf Rifi presented a detailed account of Tripoli’s pressing challenges, citing the despair driving “death boat” migration and the paralysis of key infrastructure, including Qleiaat Airport and the Deir Ammar refinery. Rifi praised the operation of the Port of Tripoli and welcomed the Prime Minister’s pledge to reactivate Qleiaat and reopen talks with Iraq on restarting the refinery.
Rifi also raised concerns about Lebanon’s prison crisis, calling the current situation “disastrous” with inmate numbers surpassing 8,000.
Rifi then reiterated his long-standing proposal to abolish military trials for civilians, describing the military court as a legacy tool of repression. PM Salam pledged to follow up on the issue and emphasized the need for an exceptional plan to avoid a looming prison explosion.
Rifi also urged the government to formally revoke illegal security practices and records like “file 303.”
Separately, MPs Nicolas Sehnaoui and Edgar Trabulsi discussed reconstruction progress, AI integration in curricula, and the implementation of technology-related legislation.
The Prime Minister also met with representatives of Khatib & Alami and the Secretary-General of the Higher Relief Commission, as well as Economic and Social Council President Charles Arbid.
