President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, met at Baabda Palace with MP Ibrahim Kanaan, who briefed him on the results of his recent meetings in Washington with officials from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the US administration.
Following the meeting, Kanaan stated that Lebanon continues to receive strong international attention, but emphasized that this attention must be matched by “a clear, reformist, sovereign, and national vision capable of making a real difference.”
Kanaan said the positive signals received internationally focus on three key areas: the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the expansion of Lebanese Army deployment in the south, full Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories, and the consolidation of arms under the authority of the Lebanese state; the advancement of structural financial reforms; and addressing the financial gap related to Lebanese depositors’ funds.
Moreover, the lawmaker stressed the importance of passing the financial regularization law to complete the needed financial legislation and restore political and financial stability.
Kanaan added that the Finance and Budget Committee will begin discussions on the banking sector restructuring law in a scheduled session on Thursday.
“The work initiated by President Aoun and the government is sending positive signals,” Kanaan concluded, affirming Lebanon’s commitment to serious reform efforts.
