Public Schools at Risk of Shutting Down
Head of Parliament’s Education Committee, MP Edgar Traboulsi, said there is no strategic plan to revive public schools, arguing that a financial pretext is being used to shut down some schools while the state continues to spend heavily on buildings it does not use. He stressed that efforts to reduce waste should not come at the expense of education.
Speaking to MFM, Traboulsi urged the Education Ministry and municipalities to act swiftly to prevent the closure of public schools and preserve the principle of education for all. He said there is confusion with the ministry over several issues, not just the integration of public schools.
Traboulsi also revealed that there is a secret list of 10 additional public schools slated for closure and merger, arguing that “the plan is clearly aimed at undermining public schools in favor of the private sector.”
