Member of Parliament and National Liberal Party President Camille Chamoun affirmed that the Israeli escalation is continuing because Israel has been clear from the outset regarding the issue of disarmament, adding: As long as weapons remain outside the authority of the state, we will unfortunately continue to witness strikes, shelling, and displacement. Above all, we hope that Hezbollah realizes this and puts an end to its actions, as it cannot continue militarily in its current form.
Speaking to MFM on the first day of its launch, Chamoun stressed that the Lebanese people have had more than their share of wars, and said: I hope we can achieve peace, turn the page on this painful chapter, and see the Lebanon we dream of.
He pointed out that in light of what Lebanon is going through today, former President Camille Chamoun pursued peace negotiations and would never have accepted a state within a state. If necessary, he might resort to Chapter VII should the Lebanese Army prove unable to fulfill its role.
Responding to a question about the possibility of President Joseph Aoun resorting to Chapter VII, Chamoun noted that President Aoun is not enthusiastic about Chapter VII and is continuing negotiations.
He added: Disarmament requires a decision, not capabilities. The army has the capacity to carry it out, and I believe President Aoun wants to avoid bloodshed among the Lebanese.
He continued: I do not doubt the capabilities of the Army Commander, but we have not seen any positive development regarding the disarmament issue.
