UNIFIL Sector West supports southern Lebanon through cooperation and action

  • Thu June 5 2025 1:03 pm

UNIFIL Sector West, under the command of Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi, is strengthening its presence in southern Lebanon through a comprehensive approach rooted in local awareness, direct engagement with municipal authorities, active listening to community needs, and the implementation of tangible projects benefiting populations affected by the recent conflict.

In line with the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Key Leader Engagements (KLEs) play a vital role in building trust and fostering cooperation with local institutional representatives. These encounters enable a direct understanding of the local context and the real needs of the communities.

Institutional Engagement and Active Listening: KLEs in Al Knaysah and Baraashit

On 3 June, Colonel Giacomo Tricase, Commander of the Italian battalion of UNIFIL Sector West, met with the new Mayor of Al Knaysah, Mr. Hassan Sweidan. The meeting highlighted the return of approximately 80% of the population following the conflict and allowed for the identification of urgent needs in administrative equipment, healthcare assistance, and logistical support.

On 30 May, the Malaysian contingent conducted another key KLE in the municipality of Baraashit, meeting with the outgoing Mayor Ali Chehab and his designated successor, Abbas Mahmoud. In addition to reinforcing institutional relations, the occasion included the inauguration of a $2,500 project for the installation of 40 convex traffic mirrors, enhancing road safety for both residents and UNIFIL patrols. The event concluded with a Community Engagement Walk, allowing for direct interaction with local citizens.

From Planning to Action: Quick Impact and CIMIC Projects

The transition from listening to action has materialized through several high-impact social and environmental projects, shaped according to priorities expressed by local communities:

• In Tayr Falsay, a Quick Impact Project was inaugurated on 3 June, comprising a photovoltaic power system, a potable water filtration unit, and solar-powered streetlights. Promoted by the Malaysian contingent, this initiative aims to improve quality of life through sustainable and renewable solutions, reducing reliance on expensive and polluting energy sources.

• In Ma'raka, on the same day, a CIMIC project was delivered to expand the town's sewage network with 850 meters of new piping. Initiated following a direct request from the municipality, the project is intended to improve sanitation conditions in the eastern neighborhood.

• In Jwayya, on 4 June, a CIMIC intervention was completed involving the delivery of 28 photovoltaic panels for the municipal building. The goal is to enhance the energy self-sufficiency of the public structure, ensure more efficient services for citizens, and promote a sustainable development model.

All materials provided were locally procured, in full compliance with the required technical standards, with the additional goal of stimulating the local economy.

UNIFIL Sector West: Ongoing Commitment and a Human-Centered Approach

The operational approach of UNIFIL Sector West goes beyond the execution of technical projects. It is based on continuous dialogue with local authorities and deep respect for the social and cultural dynamics of host communities. The activities described above embody a virtuous model of civil-military cooperation, where listening, transparency, and shared objectives translate into tangible results for the population.

Brigadier General Mandolesi emphasized:

Every project carried out by UNIFIL Sector West is based on building mutual trust and a constant effort to inform the public about the mission's goals — not only institutions but also the youth, whom I see as a vital element of Lebanese society, as they will lead the country in the future. We are here to support the resilience of local communities and foster lasting recovery. Our presence serves peace and collective well-being.

UNIFIL Sector West reaffirms its commitment to continue along this path, contributing to stability, security, and sustainable development in southern Lebanon, in full synergy with local authorities and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
