The Supreme Islamic Sharia Council, chaired by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, held a meeting at Dar Al-Fatwa to discuss national and Islamic affairs, stressing the need to preserve Lebanon’s stability and strengthen the role of state institutions.
In a statement read by council member Sheikh Fayez Seif, it urged political leaders to put national interests above personal and partisan considerations, warning against divisions that could further weaken the country.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to the Taif Agreement, the Constitution and the unity of the Lebanese state. It called for state authority to extend across the entire country and for weapons to remain exclusively in the hands of legitimate military and security institutions.
It also urged political groups to cooperate with state institutions and refrain from undermining their authority. Referring to explosive devices intercepted by Lebanese security forces, it praised their efforts and called for support for Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and his government. It stressed that anyone threatening national security must be held accountable, regardless of political or sectarian affiliation.
The statement called on the UN Security Council to act to halt ongoing Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon, citing the destruction of homes, repeated violations and civilian casualties. It also commended the president and government for their efforts in addressing the situation.
The council renewed its call for a comprehensive and fair general amnesty law, highlighting the suffering of detainees and their families and the importance of safeguarding civil peace.
On regional affairs, it expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council states, stressing that their security is an integral part of Arab national security. It condemned threats to their sovereignty and any attack targeting Mecca or Medina.
It also denounced the attack on a church in Jordan’s Karak Governorate, describing it as terrorism unrelated to religion and an attempt to undermine the country’s security and stability.
Regarding Palestine, the statement urged the international community to take action to stop attacks, violations and massacres against Palestinians, protect religious sites and support the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
