Health Ministry Investigates Suspected Trichinellosis Cases in Lebanon

  • Fri October 30 2026 12:57 pm

The Ministry of Public Health has launched an investigation into suspected cases of trichinellosis, a parasitic infection caused by consuming raw or undercooked meat, particularly contaminated pork and pork products.

In a statement, the ministry said epidemiological investigations and laboratory tests were underway in coordination with the relevant authorities to trace the source of the suspected infections and take the necessary public health measures.

The ministry stressed that trichinellosis cannot be transmitted directly from person to person. Symptoms may appear between two and eight weeks after consuming contaminated food.

Early symptoms typically include nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain, followed by fever, muscle pain, severe fatigue and swelling around the eyes. In severe cases, the infection can lead to complications affecting the heart, nervous system and respiratory system.

The ministry urged the public to avoid eating raw or undercooked meat, buy meat only from reliable and regulated sources, and follow proper food-safety practices. It also warned that freezing, salting or smoking meat does not reliably kill the parasite.

Anyone who develops symptoms after eating undercooked meat should seek medical attention promptly, as early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious complications.

The ministry also cautioned restaurants, butcher shops and meat suppliers against misrepresenting the type, origin or safety of meat, warning that any violations would be investigated in coordination with the relevant regulatory and judicial authorities and could result in legal action.
