Beirut Airport Without Electricity Since Morning, Calls for Urgent Action

  • Wed October 28 2026 6:49 pm

Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport has been without electricity from the public grid since this morning, forcing it to rely on backup generators to keep operations running and maintain the smooth functioning of its facilities and equipment as much as possible, the airport’s administration said in a statement.

Despite repeated inquiries by the airport administration to Électricité du Liban (EDL) to determine the reasons for the outage and when power would be restored, the responses have been limited to promises that electricity would be restored, none of which have been fulfilled. No official response or clarification has been received to date, the statement said.

The administration stressed that running essential facilities on backup generators was an emergency measure to ensure operations continued. However, the prolonged power outage at this vital facility was negatively affecting operational efficiency and the quality of services, while placing an additional burden on the airport, particularly given the need to keep facilities and equipment serving passengers and ensuring safe operations running.

The airport administration therefore urged EDL and the relevant authorities to take urgent action to resolve the situation and restore power. It also called on them to inform airport management of the reasons for the outage and the expected timeframe for restoring electricity, allowing it to take the necessary measures and limit the operational impact of the continued disruption.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining operations and providing services to passengers, airlines and other airport users despite the exceptional operating conditions caused by the outage. It stressed, however, that sustaining services at this vital facility requires a regular and reliable public electricity supply.
